ChatGPT ads went from $100M to $1B in five months. Now 89 countries.

TL;DRAt a glance

  • OpenAI expanded ChatGPT ads to 26 more countries on 21 October, 89 in total, and says more than 100,000 advertisers have run campaigns.
  • The product is eight months old. Its revenue run rate went from $100 million in March to $1 billion in August.
  • Ads show only on the Free plan and the $8 Go plan, labelled and separate from the answer. India is already live.
  • AEO is the earned door into the AI answer. The ad is the paid door next to it. Both need a page that answers the question.
  • From 30 October, OpenAI rewrites your ad creative by default unless you opt out.
  • Steal this: list the five questions buyers ask an AI before they buy from you, and run one small campaign on them.
  • The paid door into the AI answer is now open in most of the world, and it got to a billion dollars faster than almost anything in advertising.
  • Below: what OpenAI announced, how fast the money moved, how the ad relates to the citation, and the test to run this week.

WHAT OPENAI ANNOUNCED ON 21 OCTOBER

ChatGPT ads are now available in 89 countries. The 26 new ones include 14 across Latin America, among them Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru, plus Nigeria, South Africa, Serbia, Ukraine, Cambodia, Bangladesh and Pakistan. India joined in the weeks before the September wave, along with the Middle East.

Advertisers in the new countries can buy through technology partners or self-serve in Ads Manager. OpenAI says more than 100,000 advertisers have already run campaigns.

The ads appear only for people on the Free plan and on Go, the $8-a-month tier. Plus, Pro and Enterprise subscribers see none. OpenAI says the ads are placed apart from the response, are clearly labelled, and do not influence what ChatGPT answers. It also says more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT every week.

HOW FAST THE MONEY MOVED

Run rate is the latest period's pace multiplied out to a year. It is a speedometer, not a bank balance.

ChatGPT ads started as a US test in February 2026. CNBC reported the run rate at $100 million in March and $1 billion in August. Five months, ten times. By October, 100,000 advertisers and 89 countries.

OpenAI is also building the plumbing a grown-up ad platform needs: measurement partners, new formats, and, from 30 October, automatic creative enhancements that rewrite your ad unless you switch them off. That last one matters: the platform is already confident enough to edit your copy for you.

TWO DOORS INTO THE SAME ANSWER

Answer engine optimisation, AEO, is the work of getting your page cited inside the AI's answer. You earn it by writing the clearest answer on the internet to a question people actually ask. It is free, slow, and nobody can guarantee it.

The ad is the paid door next to the same answer. Someone asks ChatGPT what to buy, the answer appears, and a labelled ad sits beside it. Instant, rented, measurable.

Here is the point most AEO guides miss: both doors need the same page. The citation needs a page that answers the question. The ad needs a landing page that answers it too, because the person arriving is mid-question, not mid-scroll. Build the page once; it serves both.

A WORKED EXAMPLE

Say you sell running shoes in Nigeria, which just went live. (Ours, hypothetical.) The five questions your buyers ask an AI might be: which shoe for a first marathon, how much to spend, how to avoid blisters, which brand lasts, where to buy locally.

You write one page that answers all five honestly, with numbers. That page is your AEO asset. You then put $500 behind a ChatGPT ad on those five questions for 30 days and measure cost per lead against Google Search on the same questions. After 30 days you know which question is worth money. You learned that before your competitor knew the question existed.

THE PUNKD TAKE

Everyone in marketing is still writing guides on how to earn the citation. OpenAI built the shortcut and 100,000 brands took it. Earn the citation, yes, it compounds. But the brand that tests the paid slot now learns what each question is worth, in its own cost-per-lead numbers, while everyone else is still debating whether AI search is real. It is real. It has a price list in 89 countries.

STEAL THIS

  1. Write down the five questions your customers ask an AI before they buy from you. Ask your sales team; they hear them every day.
  2. Build or fix one page that answers those five questions plainly, with numbers and no fluff. That page serves both the citation and the ad.
  3. If you sell in any of the 89 countries, open Ads Manager this week and run one small campaign on those questions.
  4. Write the ad like an answer, not a slogan. The reader is mid-decision.
  5. After 30 days, compare cost per lead with Google Search on the same questions. Scale the winner.
  6. Check the creative-enhancement setting before 30 October so OpenAI does not rewrite your ad without you.

THE SHORT VERSION

  • ChatGPT ads: 89 countries, 100,000 advertisers, eight months old.
  • Run rate went from $100 million to $1 billion in five months.
  • The citation is the earned door; the ad is the paid door. Same page serves both.
  • Test five buyer questions with a small budget, then measure against Search.
