Reddit fell off ChatGPT. From 19% of answers to 2%.

TL;DRAt a glance

  • In March 2026, 19.1% of US ChatGPT answers cited Reddit. In September, 2.3% did (Ahrefs).
  • Wikipedia fell too, from 14.1% to 2.9%. Both remain among the most-cited sites.
  • A second tracker, Promptwatch, saw Reddit's ChatGPT Search citation share fall from 3.83% to 0.52% in August, and calls it provisional.
  • Nobody has shown that OpenAI demoted Reddit. The cause is not established.
  • Reddit's CEO says its search traffic has declined, and Reddit's shares fell about 9% in a day over its Google licensing deal.
  • The lesson: a channel you rent can disappear from the answer without a warning.

Reddit was the favourite source of the AI answer era. Marketers built whole plans on it. In the space of six months its share of ChatGPT answers dropped by about 88%. Here is what the data says, what it does not say, and what to do about it.

THE NUMBERS

Ahrefs, an SEO software company, analysed the top 200 domains cited in US ChatGPT answers: 2.4 million answers in March 2026 and 3.8 million in September.

Reddit was cited in 19.1% of answers in March and 2.3% in September. Wikipedia went from 14.1% to 2.9%. Both are still among ChatGPT's most-cited domains. In Ahrefs' separate worldwide sample, reddit.com was still the ninth domain ChatGPT searched most often using site: searches (a search limited to one website).

A SECOND TRACKER SAW A CLIFF

Promptwatch tracks which sites ChatGPT Search cites. It reported that Reddit averaged 3.83% of citations from 18 July to 7 August, then fell in two steps: a first drop on 8 August and a sharper one on 14 August. For 14 to 17 August the average was 0.52%, a relative decline of 86.4%.

The two sources measure different things. Ahrefs measures the share of answers that cite Reddit. Promptwatch measures the share of citations. Both point the same way.

WHAT NOBODY CAN PROVE

Promptwatch calls its figures provisional and says it cannot rule out a data-collection problem on its own side. Citation share is also not traffic.

The cause is not established. Trade coverage linked the drop to a change in ChatGPT's query fan-out, the extra searches it sends to build one answer. On 8 August the share of site: searches jumped from 0.37% to 16.8%. But that share stayed flat afterwards, so it cannot explain the sharper break on 14 August. A similar Reddit collapse in September 2025 was blamed by one analyst on Google changing a search parameter that tracking tools relied on.

OpenAI did not respond to requests for comment and Reddit issued no statement. That OpenAI demoted Reddit has not been shown.

REDDIT'S OWN SEARCH PROBLEM

Reddit has a second problem. In his letter to shareholders on 31 July, CEO Steve Huffman said Reddit's search traffic has declined in recent months and that Google's AI Overviews have not matched the value of traditional links. His line: "People don't want a summary of Reddit; they want Reddit."

Google pays Reddit under a licensing deal reportedly worth $60 million a year, and Huffman would not commit to renewing it. On 22 July, Reddit's shares fell about 9%, roughly $3.2 billion in market value, after the Wall Street Journal reported that executives had discussed internally whether the Google deal still served the company's long-term interests.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR MARKETING

If your GEO plan (getting your brand cited in AI answers) said "post in the right subreddits", it was a plan to borrow someone else's authority. That works until the borrowed source stops being quoted. Reddit's share did not slowly fade. It dropped inside a few months.

The deeper point: you cannot see the change from inside Reddit. Your threads can be great and the AI answer can still skip them.

THE PUNKD TAKE

Everyone is calling the Reddit hype wrong or right. We call it a reminder of the oldest rule in marketing: never build on land you do not own.

Reddit is useful for listening. It is a poor place to keep your whole visibility strategy. The brands that survive the next shift are the ones whose facts live on their own pages, in a form any engine can quote.

STEAL THIS

  1. Search your brand in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. Note whether each answer cites a Reddit thread, your own page, or neither.
  2. Move your strongest facts (numbers, prices, tests, policies) to pages you own, with the answer in the first two lines.
  3. Track AI citations monthly, by engine. One engine changing should not blindside you.
  4. Use Reddit to listen for the questions buyers ask, then answer them on your own site.
  5. Keep any community effort honest and useful. It is worth doing for the people, not the algorithm.

THE SHORT VERSION

  • Reddit's share of ChatGPT answers fell from 19.1% to 2.3% between March and September.
  • A second tracker saw a similar cliff in August, and it is provisional.
  • The cause is unproven. OpenAI has not said anything.
  • Reddit's own search traffic and Google deal are under pressure too.
  • Own your facts. Rent nothing you cannot afford to lose.
